Ētehi atu whakamāramatanga

  • A kura reo is an immersive te reo Māori learning experience designed to support people at all stages of their reo journey. It includes structured learning sessions, opportunities to practice speaking te reo Māori, and cultural learning through waiata, kōrero and tikanga.

    • For descendants of Toa Rangatira and of the A.R.T confederation

    • For those in the community with a passion for learning, teaching and speaking te reo Māori

    • For staff members across all departments of Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira

    • No. All levels are welcome.

    • We will have different rōpū (groups) based on proficiency so that everyone can learn at the right pace.

    • However, participants are expected to be open to speaking and trying, even if they make mistakes.

  • Absolute beginner - little or no reo Māori experience

    Beginner - basic understanding and simple phrases

    Intermediate - able to hold simple conversations

    Advanced/Fluent - confident speakers wanting to deepen their reo and cultural knowledge

  • Participants can grow confidence speaking te reo Māori, strengthen cultural understanding, build vocabulary and learn new language structures, and connect with others on their reo journey.

  • Participants are expected to:

    • Commit fully for the duration of the kura

    • Respect tikanga and kawa of the venue

    • Participate actively

    • Support and encourage others

    • Minimise English use where possible

    • Bedding and toiletries (if you require accomodation at the marae)

    • Comfortable clothing and footware

    • Water bottle

    • Notebook and pen

    • If you’d rather a device, feel free to bring your own laptop or ipad/tablet

    • An open mind and willingness to speak

  • Feeling whakamā (nervous) is completely normal. Our facilitators create a safe, encouraging environment where mistakes are part of learning. You will not be singled out or embarrassed for trying.

  • If you’re unsure of the right level for you, have a chat with someone form Te Ohu Reo and they will direct you to a level that is appropriate for you.

  • If you find that your current level is too difficult or too easy, kindly let your facilitator know and go find a member of Te Ohu Reo. The facilitators and Ohu Reo members will ensure you are placed in an appropriate level.

  • The expectation of everyone is that you participate in all classes and activities from start to finish. If you need to leave a session for any reasons, you will be required to inform your facilitator or a member of Te Ohu Reo.

    • Start: 10:00am, Tuesday 14th of April 2026. The pōwhiri for the kura reo will be held at Takapūwāhia marae, at 10:00am.

    • End: 2:30pm, Friday 17th of April 2026. The kura reo will end after a kai hākari (feast) following the final class.

  • Orientation will happen over the course of the first day of the kura reo. You will be informed on marae tikanga and kawa, behavioural expectation and all other health & safety information necessary for the kura reo.

  • Parking is limited on site. However, there is parking curbside along Wi Neera Drive.
